Executive off-road immersion · near five Western cities

Where the terrain becomes the lesson.

A private, one-day off-road leadership immersion within reach of a major Western city — from the Mojave outside Las Vegas to the Colorado high country — led by James Carter, where real terrain, real stakes, and real reflection build trust no boardroom can.

Request an invitation

By invitation — a small number of executive teams each season.

The idea

Most leadership offsites happen in a hotel ballroom. This one happens on a high-country pass — or the Sedona slickrock. Two executives per Jeep — everyone drives, everyone decides — across terrain that demands trust and rewards it. Between the climbs, James Carter turns what just happened into the leadership conversation your team has been avoiding. It’s intense, it’s dramatic, and it changes how a team sees itself.

You can’t learn to lead from a slide. Like a language, leadership is learned by immersion — dropped somewhere you can’t coast, where the next move is real and the team is watching. The Jeeps are just the vehicle. What you can’t rent anywhere else is the man, the facilitation, and the meaning James wraps around the day — the tip of the spear of a full Be Legendary retreat, compressed into one unforgettable day.

Why off-road works

You can’t coast on the trail.

This isn’t a thrill ride with a debrief bolted on. The terrain is a leadership instrument — it strips away the two things that let a team hide, comfort and pretense, and puts four real dynamics on the table where James can work them.

The core idea

Obstacle vs. limitation

The terrain hands your team a real obstacle — a line to pick, a call to make with something actually at stake. Meeting it, each person runs into something else: the limitation they brought along, the quiet story about what they can’t do. Off-road makes the difference physical — you feel, in your body, which walls are real and which you built. No leader owns anything more useful, and none of it survives a slide deck.

Across the line, into the learning zone

Nobody grows where it’s comfortable. The day is built to move people — safely, deliberately — out of “this is fine” and into the discomfort where learning actually happens. Once a team has crossed that line together, they know how to find it again on purpose.

Two teams at once

Two executives per Jeep: every person is leading and being led, minute to minute. And the vehicles have to move as one. That’s the exact shape of a leadership team — individuals who must also act as a single body — made visible for a day, and impossible to fake.

How your team actually operates

Under real load, the team’s true operating system shows: who steps up, who goes quiet, where trust runs thin. James reads it in motion and hands it back at the debrief. What surfaces on the trail is what’s been running the business the whole time.

The day

A single, unforgettable day.

Not an itinerary — an arc. It starts before the wheels turn and ends with a team that sees itself differently.

  1. 01

    Dawn gather & brief

Coffee, and the frame from James: today, the terrain is the teacher. What we’re really here to work on.

  2. 02

    Onto the trail

Two-up Jeeps, real off-road, escalating challenge. Teams navigate, decide, and rely on each other as the trail climbs.

  3. 03

    The hard stretch

The dramatic, trust-forging section — guided and safe — where the leadership metaphors stop being metaphors.

  4. 04

    The high-point reset

A facilitated leadership conversation with James at a summit or red-rock overlook, tied directly to what just happened in the vehicles.

  5. 05

    The table

A premium meal and debrief. Commitments, and what carries back to the business on Monday.

By the drive home, something has changed.

Each leader

  • Sharper self-awareness — how you show up when it’s real, not rehearsed.
  • A distinction you’ll use for years: obstacle vs. limitation.
  • The nerve to step into the learning zone on purpose.

The team

  • Trust built under real load — the kind meetings can’t manufacture.
  • A shared language and a shared story the team keeps reaching for.
  • An honest picture of how you actually operate — and commitments that carry back to Monday.

The Mojave, off the Strip

Red sandstone, sandy washes and slickrock across the Nellis badlands, Nelson Hills and Eldorado Canyon — with the 45,000-acre Logandale trail system when a longer transfer earns it. Fly into Harry Reid International; staging is 30–75 minutes from the Strip, so it’s a breakfast departure and a dinner return with convention-grade lodging behind you.

Best October–April; summer heat is the limiter.

The Sonoran Desert

Saguaro-studded desert and mountain climbs at Bulldog Canyon, Four Peaks and Box Canyon in the Tonto National Forest, 35–75 minutes from a Scottsdale resort. Distinctive scenery, beginner-to-advanced routes and dependable winter weather — with room to fold in navigation or a remote lunch.

Best October–April.

Colorado

The Front Range high country

Historic mining roads and alpine scenery on the Switzerland Trail, Rampart Range and the Peak-to-Peak corridor — based out of Boulder to keep the transfer tight, 50–100 minutes to the trail. The most dramatic scenery of the five, when the date falls inside the mountain-access window.

Primarily June–October, once the high country dries out.

Hungry Valley

A managed 19,000-acre recreation area with 130+ miles of trail north of Los Angeles — enough terrain to run several teams without every convoy sharing a route. Base in Santa Clarita or Valencia, not the coast, to hold the transfer near 75 minutes.

Best spring and fall.

Desert, canyon & Little Moab

Fast access to three kinds of terrain — Five Mile Pass desert, American Fork Canyon, and the sandstone of Little Moab — 35–75 minutes from a downtown hotel, with the airport minutes away. Moab-style rock without the expedition-scale commitment.

Broad season in the lower desert; higher routes open in summer.

Want the bucket-list version? We also run multi-day expeditions on iconic routes — the San Juan Alpine Loop, the Sedona red rock, Moab and the Rubicon — arranged directly for teams that want the full journey rather than a single day.

Who leads it

James Carter

James is the creator of the Flag Model and the sole author of the forthcoming Lost Disciplines of Leadership™, and co-authored collaborative books — including Discover Your Inner Strength and Roadmap to Success — alongside Stephen Covey, Ken Blanchard, Deepak Chopra and Brian Tracy. He has spent twenty-five years inside hundreds of leadership teams — work featured in CNN, CNN Money and Business Insider. Out on the trail, that experience becomes a facilitator who can read a team in motion and turn a hard climb into the conversation that changes them.

The questions executives ask

Answered, plainly.

Where does it take place?

Within reach of a major Western city — you fly in, and it’s roughly 30 to 100 minutes to the trailhead. We run it near Las Vegas (the Mojave), Phoenix–Scottsdale (the Sonoran Desert), Denver–Boulder (the Front Range high country), Los Angeles (Hungry Valley, out of Santa Clarita), and Salt Lake City (desert, canyon and Little Moab). What makes it singular isn’t the location — it’s James and the method. Prefer the bucket-list version? We also run multi-day expeditions on iconic routes — the San Juan Alpine Loop, Sedona, Moab, the Rubicon — arranged directly.

Is there a minimum group size?

No — we’ve hosted teams as small as two. It’s built to be small and high-touch, two executives per Jeep. There is a minimum investment for the day regardless of headcount, which we share when you enquire.

When can we do it?

It depends on the setting, and between them we can host in most seasons. The desert metros — Las Vegas, Phoenix and Salt Lake City — run best October through April; Denver–Boulder is a summer-to-early-fall high-country window; Los Angeles is best in spring and fall. We take a small number of executive teams each season, so dates are limited and arranged directly with you.

Do we need off-road experience or to be especially fit?

No experience required. Professional guides lead every mile, vehicles are provided, and the day is risk-managed throughout. It’s dramatic by design but safe and guided — the difficulty is relational, not athletic.

How much does it cost?

It’s an invitation, not a package, so there’s no public price. There is a minimum investment for the day, which we share when you start the conversation.

How do we enquire?

Request an invitation below. Tell us about your team and what you’re trying to become, and James will be in touch personally.
